Haggis, Neeps and Charity

Children across Glasgow will receive a slice of equality along with their Haggis, Neeps and Tatties this St Andrews Day thanks to support from the Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust.

The Trust has provided a donation of £1,000 to support Nil by Mouth's 'Neeps & Tatties' project which uses the Scots language to help children better understand cultures, faiths and traditions different to their own.

Pupils from Linlithgow PS talk to STV about their part in the project earlier this year.

Written entirely in Scots, and created by author Carey Morning and illustrator Anna York, ‘Neeps & Tatties’ tells the story of two warring vegetable tribes who are finally encouraged to put the past behind them in the interests of a better future. The book examines issues such as discrimination and prejudice and includes a series of classroom games and activities based around the story that explore different cultures, including looking at the significance of food and festivals in different traditions.

Since being launched in January 2021 the book has been used in over 1,200 schools right across Scotland and the story been performed by Cbeebies presenter Rory Connors on YouTube.  Hundreds mores schools are now set to take part thanks to the donation which will see free copies of the book and its resource pack being offered to teachers across the country. The campaign will launch again next month.

The Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust is an initiative through which Allied Vehicles Group donates £240,000 a year to charities in communities around its, Glasgow headquarters in Possilpark and further afield. Funding applications from organisations for a share of the £20,000 monthly figure are considered by a committee of staff and are paid out every month.

David Facenna, Corporate Culture Director at Allied Vehicles, commented:

Scotland is a wonderful melting pot of cultures, and here at Allied Vehicles we have colleagues who have joined us from all over the world; people from many faiths, and people of none. Sectarianism has no place in society, and we’re proud to support Nil by Mouth in their mission to promote understanding and build a better future for our young people.”

Emma Alexander, Nil by Mouth Partnerships Manager said:

It was amazing to hear from the Trust that their staff committee felt this was a project they would like to get behind. Since being launched in January 2021 Neeps & Tatties has been used in over 1,200 schools and every year demand for the book grows from teachers. This donation allows us to bring our message of tolerance and change to even more children and provides a unique way of exploring Scottish language and culture in the run up to St Andrews Day. We are hugely grateful to Alliance Vehicles for their kindness and encouragement. The language we use and the stories we tell our children help shape how they see the world and make sense of the differences that exist around them.
