Nil by Mouth’s work tackling sectarianism and bringing people from different backgrounds together has been backed by SPFL Club St Mirren.
Players from the men and women’s first team squad recently teamed up with the charity on its ‘Buddies’ project with St Mary’s and West Primary Schools in Paisley.
The club also brought its acclaimed ‘Street Stuff’ programme to visit the schools with dozens of children taking part in footballing training and games aimed at promoting teamwork and healthier lifestyles. The project also sees Nil by Mouth staff deliver a range of workshops to pupils at the schools exploring themes around discrimination, diversity and difference,
As a special bonus St Mirren first team players Ellery Balcombe, Peter Urminsky, Zoe Richard-Campbell, Skye Monaghan and Nikki Lavery answered questions from pupils about the lives and aspirations of a professional footballer followed by a special autograph session with the players signing t-shirts, football strips, balls and even school bags. The club also donated tickets to each school for an upcoming game at St Mirren Park.
Street Stuff provides a range of weekly activities which are free to young people across Renfrewshire and is a partnership between St Mirren, Renfrewshire Council, Police Scotland, Fire & Rescue Scotland and Engage Renfrewshire. Each month, hundreds of young people take part in its multi-sport activities which also run over school holidays.
The Buddies Project will run until the end of November when a special St Andrews Day event will bring more than 100 pupils, staff and parents from both schools together.
