Starting in August 2016, Nil By Mouth’s school programme will focus more specifically on building, and sustaining, positive relationships between two (or more) partner schools.
NBM’s new Champions for Change Award has been created to recognise and celebrate the efforts of schools who work together to challenge sectarianism. We also hope to inspire schools who have not previously worked together to join forces to battle bigotry.
In order to receive the Champions for Change Award for your school all you have to do is build/maintain a working relationship with a local partner school and arrange a couple of FREE Nil By Mouth Workshops!
An essential requirement for the award is that it is jointly undertaken by partner schools of differing denomination. In order to receive the award each school will be required to –
- Complete an initial class workshop (Dealing With Difference). This can be done on a separate basis for each school, or jointly with pupils from each school attending.
- Complete a follow-up workshop (Challenging Sectarianism). This will be delivered jointly with pupils from each school attending.
- Plan and take part in an event or campaign which promotes friendship and challenges sectarianism within the local community. We would like to inspire pupils to jointly conceive an idea and plan an event or campaign which challenges sectarianism. Previous examples of events Nil By Mouth has helped facilitate for schools include football tournaments, sports fun days, community showcases, poster campaigns, drama productions and online campaigns.
All of this will be delivered FREE OF CHARGE to participating schools, with costs for any campaigns or events covered by our Champions For Change Appeal. All we will ask pupils and schools to provide is a few suitable dates, a handful of ideas and plenty of enthusiasm!
For those not in a position to work alongside a partner school Nil By Mouth will continue to offer one-off or single workshops free of charge. However, availability for such sessions is likely to be limited due to our focus shifting towards partner school projects. For more information on our workshop sessions please click here.
Working in partnership with Nil by Mouth has had a major impact in giving our pupils a first-hand learning experience in further educating them about equality and diversity, while empowering them with learning they can use far beyond the classroom and into the playground, their homes and the wider community.
